Microbial ecologist to give Stark Lecture
“Bioremediation: Cleaning up Using Nature's Natural Cleansing Capacity” will be the topic of the Orton K. Stark Distinguished Lecture in Microbiology at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in 112 Pearson Hall. Terry Hazen, head of the ecology department and lead scientist for the Environmental Remediation Technology program at E.O. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) will be the speaker.
His current research explores the effects of environmental stressors, such as heavy metals and radionuclides, on microorganisms. Hazen has supervised the implementation of bioremediation at more than 70 contaminated sites across the United States.
Hazen also recently received one of four DOE BER Distinguished Scientist Awards. His lecture, funded by the family, friends and former students of O.K. Stark, founding chair of Miami's microbiology department, is sponsored by the microbiology department. The talk is free and open to the public.
