Freshman class large and talented; 336 enter honors program
Miami's entering freshman class not only will be the largest ever on the Oxford campus but also one of Miami's strongest academically, officials say.
As of July 5 Miami had confirmations from 3,752 students planning to enter Oxford in the coming fall. The record for the largest freshman class was set in 1974, when 3,653 first-year students enrolled.
Included in the new freshmen are 99 students who finished as valedictorians of their respective high-school classes and 336 who will enter Miami as honors students.
Miami officials say the number of out-of-state honors freshmen will triple and, overall, the number of freshmen to participate in Miami's Honors and Scholars Program will double over the previous year's total. The new class of honors freshmen also may be the university's most diverse ever in terms of academic majors, noted Provost Jeffrey Herbst.
Miami also made some gains in both racial and economic diversity, Herbst added. Of the freshmen confirmed for next fall 325 are minority students, up more than 10 percent over last year's class. Gains in African-American students (up 31 percent over the previous year) and Hispanic and Latino students (up 18 percent) lead the way.
Miami saw double-digit increases in confirmations among freshmen with the most financial need, Herbst said.
