Young Painters Competition: Awards, reception and juror lecture Jan. 31

The winner of the 2014 Miami University Young Painters Competition for the William (Miami '36) and Dorothy Yeck Award will be announced in an awards ceremony at 5:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, in the Hiestand North Gallery. A reception will be held 5:15-6:15 p.m. in the gallery lobby.

Timothy McDowell, juror, will present a lecture at 4 p.m. in room 100 of the art building.

McDowell is an artist and curator who currently is professor of art at Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. McDowell has been exhibiting his work nationally and internationally for the last 20 years. His works are in several museum, corporate and private collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The University of Iowa Museum, J.P Morgan, New York and Fidelity Investments, Boston.

The competition winner will receive the $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck Award and the painting will become part of Miami’s permanent collection. 

The works of the competition finalists are on display through Feb. 13 at the Hiestand North Gallery. This year’s competition focuses on non-representational paintings. 

2013 Young Painters Competition Winner Robert Anderson: Lecture 6 p.m. Jan. 30

Robert Anderson, the winner of the 2013 Young Painters Competition, will present a lecture of his exhibition “A Place in Time" at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, in room 100 of the art building. 

Anderson's work is on display in the Hiestand Galleries through Feb. 3.
