April 24 UPAC Lunch and Learn includes talk at Freedom Summer Memorial

freedom-summer-memorialRichard “Rick” Momeyer, professor emeritus of philosophy at Miami, will speak at the Freedom Summer Memorial on Western campus as part of the unclassified personnel advisory committee (UPAC) networking lunch, noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, April 24.

Momeyer participated in orientation training sessions in Oxford that were part of the 1964 civil rights initiative known as Freedom Summer. The training was held at Western College for Women, now part of Miami’s Western campus.

Momeyer believes there is still much to learn from the estimated 800 volunteers — many of them white college students — who trained before heading south to register black voters and set up freedom schools and community centers.

The half-hour talk will start promptly at noon at the memorial next to Peabody Hall, where training sessions were held in Leonard Theatre.

Afterward, participants can walk past Clawson Hall (another training site) to Western Dining Commons for lunch.

The faculty/staff lunch price for the buffet is about $7.50.
