This spring Miami faculty, staff and community were busy stepping up to good health. I’d like to highlight three energizing wellness programs where employees shone.

Congrats to Team Miami Plus 2016 on your completion of 10 weeks of training and the Red Brick 5K. More than 70 Miamians began a health journey that started during a chilly February, but fast forward to race day on April 24, which ended with sunshine and accomplishment. Race results included more than seven medal finishers. Go, Team Miami Plus.

Miami employees joined with the Coalition for a Healthy Community —Oxford Area and successfully completed the Walk 4 Seven Challenge to celebrate the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day on April 6, with a goal of 7 million steps in seven days. Together, we reached 13.6 million steps, with Miami faculty and staff contributing 6 million of those.

Walking is a victory for all.

Inspired by the Student Wellness #FlourishMiami movement, Miami employees participated in the Benefits & Wellness 11th annual HawkWalk. In April, Miami faculty and staff took a midday break each week to interact with co-workers and explore the principles of positive psychology. Each week’s activity focused on flourishing and achieving your best self: play, reflection, learning, social connection and helping others.

Now that summer is here (officially June 20), how do you keep those healthy strides up? Beat the heat with an air-conditioned workout in our Fitness 4 Life center in 113 Phillips Hall. We are excited to offer a variety of Fitness 4 Life programs for the summer to help keep you on pace. Programs are offered at no cost to all Miami faculty and staff and include the following:

  • Personal trainers are available during lunch and evening hours to help get you started or freshen up your routine.
  • Fitness workshops including Cross Fit, Hip Hop and Kickboxing will be offered at the new Chestnut Field House.
  • Rise and shine with 6:45 a.m. Boot Camp, walk/jog at Cook Field, or work on healthy muscle maintenance with Airrosti Rehab Team.
