Institute for A Superior Liberal Arts Education

Latest Institute News & Information

Seven weeks from now, on October 11 & 12, the second Institute for a Superior Liberal Arts Education will be held.

As of today, we have nearly 30 colleges and high schools enrolled in the 2013 Institute, including hosts Miami University and Walnut Hills High School, as well as Northwestern University, Evanston Township High School, College of William & Mary, Boston Latin High School,University of Chicago, Thomas Jefferson High School to mention just a few. As Institute space is limited, please be sure to register your school as soon as possible.

To spark your interest, here are the exciting sessions that are being planned for the first day of the Institute…

  • On Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm, we will kick off the Institute with stories of or ideas for promising liberal arts practices from participating institutions using the “IGNITE” approach.  IGNITE is a method of presentation that has spread quickly throughout educational and business circles.  Speakers “use 20 slides, rotated automatically with each shown for 15 seconds. The first Ignite took place in Seattle in 2006, and since then the event has become an international phenomenon, with gatherings in Helsinki, Paris, New York and many other locations.”  Our IGNITE session will feature 8-10 speakers sharing stories of professional practice from the classroom, excitement about a new tool sparking creativity among students, or personal stories of student engagement across disciplines. The presentations are meant to ignite attendees by generating awareness and stimulating thought and action.
  • The opening session will be followed by a casual dinner where participants can informally meet and greet one another.  We will then cap off the evening with a poster session that will feature stories from all participating institutions.  We will create the posters for you, using information you provide to us.

To help us create your poster, here is what you need to do by September 15, 2013:

  1. Appoint one delegate from your school, college or university to complete the survey.
  2. Complete the survey HERE

The survey will ask you to provide:

  • School name & location
  • Size and diversity of student body
  • What is a promising practice which you have implemented at your institution and which you believe might be a best practice for liberal arts education in the future?  Describe this practice in one paragraph (150 words or less).
  • What is a challenge that you have faced and believe will be confronted by many institutions in the future?  We encourage you to select a challenge about which you would particularly like recommendations or insights.  Please describe this challenge in one paragraph (150 words or less).
  • An electronic version of your school, college, or university's logo and a few pictures.

Last year, over 30 colleges and high schools enthusiastically responded to this opportunity to share best practices and innovative programs in liberal arts.  We are looking forward to an equally exciting event this year.
