The goal of health communication is to enhance individual and community quality of life and to improve general public health. Understanding the role of communication in influencing individual health decisions and overall health outcomes is a crucial skill towards improving public health. As a Health Communication major, you will develop effective communication strategies and pursue an in-depth study of health related issues facing various communities. You will take classes grounded in both communication theory and practice, with many of the required classes being offered online. The degree will give you the opportunity to focus on human identity and diversity, quantitative and qualitative research competency, 21st century communication skills, and public advocacy.

At Miami, students majoring in Health Communication must complete a core set of classes and then have the opportunity to select additional classes in introductory communication, additional writing/technology, intercultural competence, health electives and advanced electives.
