Dr. Van Gundy's research focuses on the etiology and risk factors of female criminality, the development and extension of feminist criminological theory, and the implementation of gener specific policy and procedure within the American system of corrections. She is a consultant for numerous local, state, and federal jails and penitentiaries, programs for at risk women and victims of domestic violence, and local law enforcement agencies.

Dr. Van Gundy is active on numerous campus and discipline committees and is a member of the following organizations: National Criminal Justice Association, Justice Studies Association, American Correctional Association, American Society of Criminology, and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. Her work and publications have been published in multiple journals and pook publications and is also an affiliate of Womens, Sexuality, and Gender Studies.

In 2012, Dr. Van Gundy was the recipient of the YWCA's Outstanding Woman of Achievement Award in Education, and was awarded Educator of the Year by Cincy Magazine in 2014.
