How Do I take an online course if I'm not in Ohio?

Why am I being asked to provide "State Residency"?

In order to comply with state and federal regulations, Miami must determine where online, hybrid, and IVDL you will be located when taking these courses.

When you enroll in one of these courses, you will receive an email with a link to a form where you can indicate the state in which you will be for that term. You will only have to complete the form once per term in which you are enrolled in an online, hybrid or IVDL course. If you ignore the emails,  one week prior to the term you will receive a message at your Miami login to go complete the form in order to continue to your Miami services. Once complete, their services will be available.

How Do I know what timezone a course is offered?

Unless otherwise stated, all course activities (discussions, tests, assignments, etc. ) are due by their stated due date and in Eastern Time (EST). Regardless of the time zone in which you are located, the classroom will record your submission in Eastern Time.

The Eastern Time zone is the same time zone in which Miami University is located.

For more information about time zones and which time zone you are located in, please visit timeanddate.com.

Setting Time Zone in Canvas

All dates and times throughout your Canvas courses are displayed according to a course's respective time zone. However, you can set your own time zone for your user account and have your local time zone display throughout Canvas. Displaying dates in your local time may help you stay up to date on assignments and due dates, especially if your course time zone differs significantly from where you reside.

How Do I know which programs Miami offers outside of Ohio?

The programs Miami is authorized to offer outside of Ohio vary by state. To determine which programs are available in your state, visit Miami’s State Authorization page and select your state from the drop-down list.
