Instructor Presence

Instructor presence is the most important factor influencing student’s success and course satisfaction. Just as we do for our face-to-face courses, online faculty must also create a strong sense of presence in our online courses, giving students confidence that someone is facilitating their learning experience. Unlike cultivating presence in our face-to-face courses, instructor presence in the online environment presents unique challenges for which equally specialized approaches must be employed. Simply teaching the course as a subject matter expert isn’t enough and, although strategies like frequent feedback, regular announcements, timely correspondence, and social engagement are strong indicators of instructor presence, online faculty must also be ‘real’, three-dimensional facilitators, with personalities that come through the screen, to help students achieve learning outcomes and high course satisfaction. The Online Instructor Presence Workshop will examine several challenges and barriers to instructor presence in the online environment, as well as present multiple strategies you may employ to increase the level of presence in your courses.

Communication Strategies

Commonly, in face-to-face courses, instructors are the main focal point in the classroom. Whether through lectures, questions, prompts, guided facilitation and responses to students, instructor-student interaction in the classroom is a major part of the teaching and learning experience. The focus shifts when you move courses to the online environment. Rather than a ‘real life’ instructor, online learning resources often become the focus of engagement for students in the online learning environment. However, without meaningful instructor-student interaction, students report they feel disconnected and unsupported in their online learning experience. The Communication Strategies Workshop will examine strategies instructors may use to interact with and teach students in a meaningful way; moving students toward greater attainment of learning goals and more advanced thinking.

Feedback for Facilitation

Instructor ‘feedback’ on assignments is so much more than grading commentary, or final thoughts to students about their work. Instead, instructors and students alike should think of ‘feedback’ as the ‘beginning of a conversation.' When used to facilitate, feedback may help students: understand what to do with their time; know how they should feel about their performance; assess whether or not their motivation/work effort is appropriate; examine whether or not they are meeting expectations; etc. Because feedback is important to promote continued learning, especially in the online classroom, the Feedback for Facilitation Workshop will examine several key considerations, including different ways to provide feedback, different ways to offer it, how it could be focused, and what the feedback should ‘say’.

Self-Care Strategies

As the semester advances, do you find yourself forgetting to take care of ‘you’? During the academic year, many faculty are intently invested in their students’ success, in addition to course management, research, scholarship, and service - to name a few things. Taking time to attend to their own interests and needs seems to be what is most easily sacrificed in order to make everything else happen. Does this sound familiar? If so, perhaps it is time to start examining ways in which you are caring for yourself throughout the semester. Maybe even those words, “caring for yourself”, seem foreign to you. ‘Self-care’ refers to the activities and practices in which we engage to reduce stress and maintain our health and well-being, and is essential for hard-working, faculty who are committed to students and their work and their own personal goals. The Self-Care Strategies Workshop will examine ways for identifying and managing challenges stemming from teaching in the online environment, as well as strategies for improving efficiency and reducing stress and fatigue.
