Bachelor of Music in Music Education

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree programs prepare students for careers in public school teaching, and for graduate study within the discipline.

Miami's music education program is distinctive in many respects. For example:

  • Clinical experiences in music education begin in the first year of study; these help students understand the depth of knowledge and musicianship required for successful teaching.
  • Students in music education are expected to meet high standards in music performance. Meeting these standards promotes self-confidence, which is a necessary component of successful teaching.

For the Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree, students select one of two programs:

  • The Instrumental Program, typically for students who plan to teach and conduct band and/or orchestra. See the course of study (in the Miami General Bulletin) or view a four-year sample degree plan in PDF format.

Instrumental students must select a major instrument from the following:

      • Piano
    • Violin
    • Viola
    • Cello
    • Double Bass
    • Harp
      • Flute
    • Oboe
    • Clarinet
    • Bassoon
    • Saxophone
      • French Horn
    • Trumpet
    • Trombone
    • Euphonium
    • Tuba
    • Percussion
  • The Choral/General Music Program, typically for students who plan to teach general music in the classroom and/or lead vocal/choral groups. See the course of study (in the Miami General Bulletin) or view a four-year sample degree plan in PDF format.

Both degree programs require 128 credit hours of specific coursework. The resulting licensure is for grades preK-12.
