Richard is a 1970 Miami graduate with a B.S. in Business. He also earned an M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in 1972.

Richard is the CEO of The J. M. Smucker Company, which has a family of brands holding the number one market position in ten categories in grocery stores across North America. He is the great-grandson of J. M. (Jerome Monroe) Smucker, who founded the company bearing his name in Orrville, Ohio in 1897. Richard joined the company in 1972 as a plant controller and has held various positions at Smucker’s including treasurer, vice president, executive vice president, chief administrative officer, chief financial officer, president, and co-CEO. Since the fall of 2011, Richard has been sole CEO of the Company.

In addition to serving on the board of J.M. Smucker, Richard is the chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. He is also a director of The Sherwin-Williams Company, Grocery Manufacturers Association, Musical Arts Association of the Cleveland Orchestra, and The Consumer Goods Forum. His past board memberships include International Multifoods, Inc., Buttonwood Capital Partners, Bill Knapps Restaurants, International Foodservice Manufacturers Association, AF Murch Company and the Culinary Institute of America. He has also served on various charitable organizations.

Richard’s extensive involvement at Miami has included service on the Foundation Board, Board of Trustees (including as chairman), Campaign for Miami Corporate/Foundation Committee and the Business Advisory Council and Farmer Board of Visitors. In 1992, he was an Executive-in-Residence. He and Emily have also attended Alumni Weekend and the Presidential Mountain Retreat. Richard resigned from the Board of Trustees in 2010 due to taking on new responsibilities with the Cleveland Federal Reserve Board.

Richard met his wife, Emily Delp Smucker, on campus. They were married after their junior year and then lived in an apartment in Oxford their senior year. After graduating in 1970 with an education degree, Emily taught second grade in Middletown. When they moved to Pennsylvania and California, she continued to teach until they had their daughter, Julie (graduate of Princeton). Emily became a homemaker and was active in their community when they moved to the Medina, Ohio area. While at Miami, she was a member of Delta Delta Delta. The Smuckers now have two grandchildren.
