Nearly all students who live in rental units within the Mile Square (except those with more than four rental units per building) are visited in person in late August during our annual Walkabout - a program that brings together campus and community volunteers to welcome students to the Oxford neighborhood. During each brief visit, volunteers will speak with students about general living topics, including Oxford ordinances, parking and safety, as well as broader tips for being a good neighbor and community member. Each unit reached by volunteers will receive chocolate chip cookies.

Why do we need Walkabout? 

College towns have dealt with challenging student behavior for decades. Walkabout is based on the premise that interacting with students on their own doorstep makes them more aware of the broader Oxford community and makes a positive impact on behavior.


About 100 volunteers will visit 20-30 units each over about 1-2 hours. They have a brief conversation with the students they reach about the Oxford community - city ordinances, local services, and community expectations of responsible and respectful behavior. 

We need about 150 volunteers. We welcome people of all ages, including community members, faculty, staff, and students. Children and pets are always nice additions to teams. The greater the diversity of participants, the better we represent the full community.
