Honors Program

The University Honors Program welcomes all incoming students and their families to select the summer orientation session that works best for their schedules (pending space available, as sessions do fill up). At each session, Honors advisors will be available to educate and inform students and families about the program and its requirements, and make essential connections that will prepare students to become vital members of the Honors community. Though the Honors Program staff provides support at orientation, you will participate in nearly every part of orientation with non-Honors students, allowing everyone to meet peers, faculty, and staff members from all parts of the university and their respective divisions.

Advising at Summer Orientation

Honors students complete the Global Miami Plan, the university’s liberal education degree plan. During orientation, you will learn about Miami’s emphasis on liberal education and how you will complete the Global Miami Plan requirements beginning in your first semester.

In order to prepare for course registration at orientation, you will attend an advising session for your academic division. Miami University has five academic divisions: the College of Arts and Science; Farmer School of Business; College of Creative Arts; College of Education, Health, and Society; and the College of Engineering and Computing. At your division's advising session, you will learn about the requirements for your intended major and division. For example, if you are in the College of Arts and Science, you will learn about the requirements that all students in the College must meet, as well as the requirements for your specific major. As an Honors student, you will also be assigned an Honors advisor who will advise you during the academic year on fulfilling your Honors requirements, which align with the Global Miami Plan.

Honors requirements

Honors students are required to take two Honors classes during their first year at Miami; one honors course in the fall, and one Honors course in the spring. You will enroll into your fall Honors course at Orientation at the same time you register for your other classes. The Honors course recommendations by major and/or division are available on the Honors Program website.

Honors Orientation Events

You will receive the majority of information you need for your first semester at your divisional advising session, which takes place in the afternoon of Day 1. Honors advisors will hold information sessions about University Honors Program requirements for you and your family members on Day 1 of orientation. Honors advisors will be available at orientation registration to assist you in registering for an Honors course.
