Assistive Technology

Academic materials for students who become overwhelmed by reading assignments or have in the past used assistive technology/E-Text can be accommodated with specific document/software/equipment accommodations when the documented disability lies within a learning domain that affects comprehension and/or processing and/or reading speed. Miami University has taken aggressive steps to move towards accommodating students with documented reading disorders by providing a combination of formats such as Kurzweil 3000™, Adobe Acrobat Reader™, and Daisy II™ formats obtained from the Recordings For the Blind and Dyslexic (RFBD)™. Format selection is based on targeted areas of struggle, complexity of need, and past use with specific formats and applications.

While reading expectations at the university level can be challenging, no assistive technology/E-Text combination can replace the time management and personal commitment required to assemble acquired knowledge that is gathered through reading. If you have used assistive technology/E-Text in the past or have been identified as a prospective user, it is essential that you discuss your needs with the learning specialist or coordinator with whom you are working. During the interview, a determination will be made as to which format is most appropriate given your learning style and individual struggles.

Every semester you must request assistive technology/E-Text services when completing your accommodations request. A Letter of Accommodation will be generated for you to take to The Print Center along with your textbooks and original copy of your receipt. After the conversion process is completed, the textbook and electronic media will be picked up at The Print Center. At the end of the semester or as soon as you no longer need the software (E-Text files), the disk must be returned to The Print Center.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Turnaround time can take up to three weeks.
