Respect for human diversity is an essential element of our Miami community (MUPIM 1.3). Our different identities around religion, spirituality, and meaning-making are one dimension of our diversity. Miami will not tolerate harassment or discrimination on the basis of religion (MUPIM 3.6). Also, Miami is committed to making reasonable accommodations for the religious identities of students, staff, and faculty.

Here is an overview of Miami's policies on religious prejudice and religious accommodations.

For students

Safe and civil environment: To promote a safe and civil campus environment, Miami expects each student to follow the standards of conduct. These prohibit offenses committed against a person intentionally selected by reason of their religion. Read the full policy

Unprejudiced learning environment: Every Miami instructor is responsible for endeavoring to ensure that the learning environment is free from all forms of prejudice that negatively influence student learning, including those based on religion. Read the full policy

Excused absences: Miami excuses class absences for religious observances. You must give written notification to your instructor within the first two weeks of class of the religious event that prohibits class attendance and the date that will be missed, if officially known. For such an absence, Miami expects your instructor to provide you with reasonable accommodations for completing missed work. Read the full policy

For staff and faculty

Requesting accommodations: Miami will reasonably accommodate the religious beliefs, observances, and practices of its employees. Employees must direct requests for reasonable accommodation to the appropriate personnel office (Academic Personnel Services or Department of Human Resources). Read the full policy

Time off for religious observance: Since many important religious observances occur on days not designated as legal holidays, the university will reasonably accommodate requests for leaves of absence or vacation expressly for the purpose of engaging in religious observances. Read the full policy
