Patient Conduct and Responsibilities (PDF)

The patient and his/her family are responsible for:

  • Providing the most accurate and complete information that they can about present complaints, past illnesses, hospitalizations, medications and other matters relating to the patient’s health.
  • Reporting unexpected changes in your condition to the responsible practitioner.
  • Letting staff know when you don’t understand the treatment plan or what is expected of you.
  • Following the treatment plan that you develop with the responsible practitioner. This may include following the instructions of nurses and allied health personnel as they carry out the treatment plan, implement the responsible practitioner’s orders, and enforce applicable rules and regulations.
  • Keeping appointments and for contacting the facility if you can’t keep the appointment for some reason.
  • Your actions and the consequences of those actions. If you refuse treatment or do not follow the practitioner’s instructions, outcomes may be sub-optimal.
  • Following University rules and regulations affecting patient care and conduct and no smoking policy.
  • Being considerate of the rights of other patients and staff, and for helping control noise.
  • Being respectful of the property of other persons and of the University.
  • Assuring that your bill is paid as promptly as possible.
