Service & Leadership Coordinator Position

The Harry T. Wilks Leadership Institute and the Office of Community Engagement and Service are merging to create a hub for leadership development and service within the Division of Student Life. This new office will play a central role in creating a culture of leadership combined with a passion for service at Miami University. The goal is to develop ethical and transformational leaders that are prepared and inspired to serve and lead beyond the university.

Service and Leadership Coordinators (SLCs) are invaluable undergraduate student staff members. They aid in the planning and coordination of Wilks’ many programs and opportunities.

Required Application Materials (submitted online with your application):

  • List of 3 references
  • Microsoft Word or PDF document answering the following three short-answer questions:
    • Why are you interested in working as a Service & Leadership Coordinator? (suggested word count is 350 words or less)
    • Describe what the phrase "Inspire Action" means to you. How would you want to "Inspire Action" in your role as an SLC? (suggested word count is 350 words or less)
    • Which two SLC project areas are you most interested in and why? (suggested word count is 350 words or less) 
Applicants who do not submit all three of the required application materials (resume, references, short-answer question responses) will have an incomplete application. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

SLC Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at Miami University during the 2019-2020 academic year
  • Must have with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7
  • Must be in good disciplinary and academic standing with Miami University throughout the entire term of employment
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with various audiences
  • A willingness to relate to and work well with others in a team setting
  • A commitment to principles of diversity and inclusion
  • A strong, self-initiated work ethic
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Superior time management skills
  • The ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects
  • A willingness to address and find solutions to problems or unexpected issues
  • The ability to easily adjust to changing priorities, responsibilities, or circumstances
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
  • Clifton Strengths for Students experience preferred (ie. Attendance to Perlmutter Leadership Conference and/or Strengths workshops)

SLC Expectations

  • Embody the Wilks core values of ethics, authenticity, student-centeredness, professionalism, inclusion, and collaboration in their role as an SLC
  • Attend and participate in regular staff development opportunities and one-on-one supervisory meetings
  • Build community and develop rapport among the team of SLC staff members
  • Attend and support Wilks-related programming and events
  • Actively reflect upon the learning, growth, and professional development gained as an SLC
  • Be open to new ideas and experiences

General Wilks Responsibilities

  • Serve as a representative of the Wilks Leadership Institute at campus and community events
  • Build relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members as related to specific projects
  • Coordinate logistical responsibilities for Wilks curricular/co-curricular programming as assigned (i.e. reservations of rooms, ordering food, the design of advertising materials, recruiting participants, reviewing applications, meeting with presenters, etc.)
  • Contribute to the maintenance of the Wilks Leadership Institute’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts
  • Assess and provide written reports for the programs supported

Terms of Employment

  • One-year position with opportunities to continue employment for additional academic years 
  • Each staff member assigned to multiple project areas
  • Work approximately 8-12 hours per week in the Wilks Leadership Institute (2018 Armstrong) 
  • Start date of Sunday, August 25, 2019 (Staff Training Retreat)

Compensation

New SLC staff are paid at a rate of $8.70/hour for the 2019-2020 Academic Year.

April 25: Deadline to Accept Position
April 29 - May 3: Informal Training for 1-2 hours on one day
Sunday, August 25: FALL TRAINING (~3 hours)
