Leadership Certificate Program

What is the Leadership Certificate Program?

The Leadership Certificate Program is a two-semester experience that challenges participants to examine leadership from  several perspectives and reflect on their personal leadership beliefs. The first semester —The Core— provides a common series of activities to develop an initial understanding of leadership beliefs followed by a second semester —The Deep Dive— into complementary tracks. These might include a Leadership Deep Dive with the Wilks Leadership Institute or a Social Action Deep Dive with the Office of Community Engagement and Service. Participants select the track which most interests them. Certificate completion requires a written philosophy statement that is influenced by the Leadership Core but also reflects the context of the Deep Dive.

  • Attend the Perlmutter Leadership Conference or other StrengthsQuest Workshop
  • Attend two Lessons in Leadership or similar events per semester
  • Attend a Leadership Lecture or similar event each semester
  • Read one leadership book each year and draft a reflection/review
  • Participate in or lead one service project
  • Participate in one Diversity Affairs Council (DAC) event or similar activity
  • Join or lead a student organization
  • Attend three Wilks Leadership Workshops
  • Conduct one leader interview
  • Draft a leadership philosophy statement

Some of these requirements can be met through participation in other campus activities; you can easily petition for substitution of event requirements. Many of these requirements are accompanied by a written reflection that must be submitted to complete that requirement.

There is no fee to participate in the Certificate program.

Part II:  Wilks Leadership Fellows Program

Upon completing the Certificate Program, you are eligible for the Fellows Program. This is an individualized and mentored leadership journey that you will help create and direct that will build on the leadership capacity developed in the certificate program, but is more specific to the type of leadership you desire to develop and demonstrate. It will include academic coursework, high-impact leadership co-curricular experiences and leadership competencies-based activities.
