When two Miami students marry, they're called a Miami Merger. Of living Miami alumni, more than 14 percent are married to each other, creating approximately 13,165 mergers. Miami's 14.25 percent is especially high compared to the average percentage of alums marrying alums from the same college, which is thought to be between 3 and 9 percent. The alumni office sends out several thousands Valentines each year to Miami Merger couples. During Alumni Weekend 2009, Miami held a "Merger Moment" ceremony at which 1,087 couples renewed their wedding vows near the Upham Hall Arch, setting a new record for the highest number of wedding vow renewals at a single time.
