Message from the dean:
Greetings,
Exams are over and another graduating class--diplomas in hand--has departed to start their new lives. I'm left wondering how my first year at Miami could have sped by so quickly.
The 2006-07 academic year was filled with numerous honors for faculty, staff and students--a sampling of which are described in this newsletter. We've been busy thinking about how to improve the educational experiences we provide our students and, in general, going through a period of renewal.
I'm pleased to report that the faculty of the School of Education voted April 23 to rename our division "Education, Health and Society." The proposed name now must be approved by University Senate and Miami's Board of Trustees, but I'm delighted that we are moving closer to having a title that captures the scope of what we do and the connections and interrelationships among disciplines.
Warm regards,
Carine M. Feyten, Ph.D.
Dean and Professor of Foreign Language Education

Continual improvement requires feedback from the School of Education and Allied Professions most important constituency--its alumni, according to Carine Feyten, EAP dean. An easy-to-take survey is now online, and the results will be used to help improve the quality of EAP programs.

The vote is in. School of Education and Allied Professions' faculty have voiced their approval for a new divisional name. If Miami 's board of trustees approve, the division is expected to be officially known as "Education, Health and Society."

In the past five years, three EAP faculty and three EAP alumni have received Miami's "Woman of Color" award. That trend continues with this year's honoree Professor Paula Saine of the teacher education department.

Miami's 9th annual Teacher Job Fair attracted 56 school districts and more than 300 students. School districts from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and other more far away states sent recruiters to Miami to talk about teaching opportunities in their districts.

It's becoming almost routine. Once again a student teacher supervisor from Miami has won the top state honor that recognizes the role such professionals play in preparing future teachers. Judith Wyckoff joins other Miami supervisors in this elite group.
