Krystina HirdAlfred Free Scholarship – Krystina Hird (Biochemistry major with Molecular Biology and Plant Biology minors) was recently awarded our first annual Alfred Free Scholarship.  This scholarship is in memory of Alfred Free, an undergraduate chemistry major at Miami who graduated in the early 1940’s. Dr. Free earned his PhD from Case Western, and then went to work at Miles Laboratory. With his wife Helen, Free discovered a number of important diagnostics, including Clinistix, which was used to measure blood sugar. Alfred died in 2000. The Alfred Free Scholarship was established by his family to promote undergraduate research and to encourage students to present their work at the National ACS meeting.

The Miami Chemical Society, the student affiliated club of the American Chemical Society, was recently awarded as commendable by the ACS for the 2016-17 year.

2017 REU studentsNSF-REU students at Miami University. Due to a grant from NSF awarded to Carole Dabney Smith and Chris Makaroff, we were able to host another cohort of REU students this year. Our students this year were Aramis Smith (Eastern Illinois University), Katherine Clowes (University of Kentucky), Caitlin Loeffler (College of St. Joseph/St. John’s University), Mikalya DeLuca (Penn State Berks Campus), Hannah Lacy (University of Alabama-Birmingham), and Jamie Waterman (University of Vermont).

A nice article appeared in the Miami Matters about Callie Miller and Audrey Short, our 2017-18 Beckman scholars (Miami Matters). In the article, there was a “Where are they now?” segment, and Christine Hajdin and Megan Matthews were profiled.
