Content of Abstracts

The abstract should contain the following information:

  • a clear initial statement of purpose,
  • a brief explanation of the abstract's relationship to the previous literature on the topic, including direct citations of any important literature
  • a summary of the argumentation, some examples to be used in the argumentation.
  • The abstract should make plain to someone unfamiliar with the subject why the argument being made is worth making in relation to the subject; at the same time, it should make plain to someone familiar with the subject why the argument being made is plausible.
  • Successful abstracts pass through many hands: ask friends and colleagues to read drafts and make suggestions.
  • Proofreading errors should be avoided.
  • Take special care over the first and last sentence.
  • The abstract should make it clear that the paper is suitable for oral presentation within the time limit (maximum time is 12 minutes).

Format of Abstracts

  • Abstracts must be one page in length Abstracts longer than one page will not be accepted.
  • The top margin should be 0.8 inch; the left, right, and bottom margins should be 1 inch.
  • Line spacing should be 1.5. Single-spaced abstracts will not be read.
  • The text of the abstract should be in 11 point Times New Roman font.
  • For our purposes, please also include, at the bottom of your abstract, your name and institution. Additionally, the title of the abstract should be in the upperright-hand corner in 12 point Times New Roman font.
