Master of Arts in Teaching - English

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is an innovative degree program designed for working K-12 teachers. With a focus on classroom research and reflection, the OWP MAT enables teachers to work together to share practical, impactful strategies that can be directly applied to the classroom and students. Created for teachers by teachers, the OWP MAT program is flexible and meaningful for teachers looking to find their professional home.

The OWP Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is for you if:

  • You have a bachelor's degree from an accredited school
  • You have a teaching certificate
  • You have at least one year of teaching experience

Through the OWP Tuition Guarantee, each credit hour is discounted, regardless of your employment status. All OWP classes are $375 per credit hour.

With a variety of in-person, online, and hybrid courses and workshops available, OWP classes are flexible and convenient for your busy teaching schedule.

The OWP MAT is a 32-credit hour degree that designed to give teachers flexibility and choice in their coursework. With a combination of elective courses, classroom research, and the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute, teachers will be able to focus on topics that are relevant and meaningful to their classrooms.

How to apply:

  1. Email Kristin Hock, at hockkn2@miamioh.edu to schedule an application appointment.
  2. Apply to the Miami University Graduate School (select English and Master of Arts in Teaching). PLEASE NOTE: The January application deadline does not apply to the Ohio Writing Project Master of Arts in Teaching.
  3. Submit the OWP/MAT application and your professional resume.
  4. Have your principal, department chair, curriculum director, or other school official submit the OWP/MAT recommendation document.

You may also meet with the Financial Aid office to arrange any needed assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to take the GRE?

The GRE is not required if you are a certified teacher.

I have taken OWP classes but I have never taken the four-week workshop. Do I need to do that?

All MAT candidates must complete the four-week Workshop on the Teaching of Writing as part of the Foundation Class before taking the online Classroom Research class.

I took the four-week workshop a few years back. Will it still count?

Students with OWP credit that is more than five years old may petition the Graduate School to have their credit apply to the MAT.

Will OWP electives be offered during the school year?

Occasionally, OWP may offer one–, two–, and three–credit– hour workshops during the school year.

May I take classes offered through the English or Education Departments at Miami instead of OWP classes?

You may substitute up to 6 semester hours for OWP classes. Substitutions will be made on an individual basis.

Are there scholarships available?

OWP Scholarships will be awarded on a limited and competitive basis for the four-week Workshop on the Teaching of Writing.

Which classes will I take?

  • Teaching of Writing Workshop (6 semester hours)
  • OWP workshops of your choice (15 semester hours)
  • Research in your own classroom (11 semester hours)

What can I expect from my MAT classes?

  • To work with expert K-12 classroom teachers and Miami faculty
  • To explore K-12 writing, reading, and teaching theory
  • To participate in interactive classes grounded in classroom practice and aligned with state standards
  • To learn ways to improve students’ reading and writing and develop best practice lessons
  • To read, discuss, and share writing
  • To receive teaching ideas to take back to your classroom
  • To learn ways to energize your teaching

Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive and limited basis for the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute.

To apply for a scholarship, send a one-page application (see below) to Monica Fisher, fishermv@MiamiOH.eduThe deadline is April 30, 2024.

  • What are your strengths as a teacher? What do you believe about teaching?
  • What areas of your teaching are you hoping to develop?
  • How will you share your learning with other educators when you leave the workshop?
