The Piana del Cansiglio

The Piana del Cansiglio

Paris: Cultural Capital

This three-week workshop in Paris over J term will allow students to discover masterpieces of French and American culture from the cathedrals of the Middle Ages to the contemporary modernist metropolis beloved by artists, writers, and filmmakers in a transnational context. Through a combination of excursions, seminar-style discussions, small group collaborative projects, and lectures, students learn about French and American expatriate cultural works in a broad socio-historical context and reflect about literature, travel, and the great works of art inspired by the diverse cultural contexts of Paris today. Paris is the capital city of France and yet has long beckoned artists and writers from all over the globe; it is a beautiful contemporary metropolis with an amazing living memory of the past. It has some of the world's greatest works of arts and museums (from the Louvre to the Centre Pompidou) and is a space that has inspired dozens of films, such as Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris." It's a very walkable city with wonderful green spaces, café's, and uniquely distinct neighborhoods, which make it the ideal location to discover the world as a traveler and to experience first-hand the amazing works of arts inspired by this great city.
