Mission Statement

The Department of Geography at Miami integrates social and physical sciences to engage diverse people, places, and environments. Geographers and planners think spatially and use diverse geospatial technologies and approaches to understand a changing world and plan a more sustainable future. Our research and teaching focus on urbanization and planning, global development, and environmental change, and links among them.

Geography majors study human and environmental processes in space, using techniques like remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems. Urban and Regional Planning majors use planning and mapping techniques to identify key urban problems, set long-range goals, and design effective solutions. All of our students develop the critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and technical skills sought by graduate programs and employers, and needed to address contemporary challenges.
