Graduate Students

Joshua Buchanan is a graduate student in the social psychology PhD program at Miami University. Josh attended the University of Oklahoma, where he received his B.A. in psychology. At Miami, Josh received his M.A. in 2012, and he is expected to receive his PhD in 2015. His research broadly examines the antecedents, experiences, and consequences of regret. His work has identified when experiences of regret might lead to beneficial rather than detrimental outcomes while distinguishing between two unique elements of regret. Josh has also examined how people utilize regret during everyday coordination, why people publicly express feelings of regret, and the functions or motivations these expressions serve.

Ryan J. Walker is a graduate student in the social psychology PhD program at Miami University. Ryan attended Albion College, where he received his B.A. in psychology and minor in anthropology/sociology. At Miami, his research broadly examines what influences individual’s emotions and decisions. More specifically, he examines when and why people think about “what might have been” (counterfactual thinking), with a focus on how these thoughts impact subsequent intentions and emotions, such as regret. He also investigates the impact of individual differences on decisions.
