Teaching

Jennifer Cohen teaches courses on economic development and inequality; gender, race, and class; and work. Her courses are each designed to generate challenging, engaging discussions that develop students' ability to consider the world using global political economy as an analytical framework. Before joining the faculty at Miami University, Dr. Cohen was Assistant Professor of Economics at Whitman College.

Research

Jennifer Cohen is an economist whose research focuses on labor markets, precarity, and women's work in South Africa.
Her current project uses in-depth interviews with nurses employed in a public hospital in Johannesburg to examine stress and anxiety. The project examines the complex context in which black women nurses make labor supply decisions, the lived experience of paid and unpaid care work, and nurses’ perceptions of their households and their work.

Dr. Cohen has also conducted field research with street traders in Johannesburg to study the ways in which macroeconomic forces shape microeconomic decisions and experiences. The study was supported by The Office of the South African Presidency through the Second Economy Strategies Project.

Collaboration

Dr. Cohen is a Research Associate with the Society, Work, and Development Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.
