Mathematics and Physical Science

Majors in mathematics, statistics, and the physical science departments such as Chemistry, Geology & Environmental Earth Science, and Physics will help you understand such complex problems as climate change or the development and distribution of energy resources. Our graduates are employed by state and federal agencies, environmental energy and natural resource industries, research and educational institutions, and environmental law firms.

Highlights and Opportunities

  • Conduct interdisciplinary research at the Geospatial Analysis Center (GAC), which offers the latest techniques in remote sensing, global positioning systems (GPS), and geographic information systems (GIS)
  • Develop research projects and practicums focused on environmental science, sustainability, and energy at the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability's (IES) Professional Service Project (PSP) rooms in collaboration with various government agencies and nonprofits
  • Participate in field-based learning at local, national, and international sites
  • Utilize Miami's state-of-the-art laboratories and computing facilities in the renovated Shideler Hall, which houses the Department of Geography, Department of Geology & Environmental Earth Science, and the IES
  • Collaborate with faculty mentors on research projects that result in co-authored journal articles and conference presentations, or propose and conduct your own research
  • Join student groups such as Green Oxford to educate Miami students and Oxford community members about local sustainability issues
