Communication Design Minor

Students who complete the Communication Design Minor enhance their core area of study at Miami with design thinking and making skills. Most courses in the minor are studio-based, enriching the learning experience through highly engaged interactions with faculty in small course sizes (around 20 students per course). Those who complete the program are prepared to use their skills to create and produce visual outcomes that communicate clearly, activating conceptual messaging and detailed aesthetics.

At Miami, Communication Design minors can:

  • Learn in a small, supportive environment (About 20 students per class).
  • Access Communication Design studios and production facilities 24 hours a day.
  • Receive personal mentorship for seeking careers that integrate their core area of study with design.
  • Learn evidence-based design methods and rapid prototyping skills to create sustainable, innovative outcomes.
  • Develop skills for using industry-standard software.
  • Easily combine study in design with majors in the College of Creative Arts and beyond.

The Communication Design Minor includes instruction in design research methods like interviewing, observations, and surveys, as well as rapid prototyping and testing to discover what and how to create so it meets stakeholders’ needs. Students develop a refined sense of using color and typography to enhance communication and usability in the minor by creating designs that span logotypes, publications, presentations, and posters.

The Communication Design Minor comprises courses required for the BFA in Communication Design, allowing students to begin work toward either program during their first semester at Miami.
