Howard, Miami's resident playwright, holds a PhD from the University of Texas, and an MFA from the University of Iowa Playwrights Workshop.

His main focus of study and activity relates to structural dramaturgy (the overall structure of playscripts), particularly in the work of Shakespeare, the Greeks, and new plays. He is regularly invited to give workshops on playwriting and structural dramaturgy at major academic institutions in the Czech Republic, China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand, and serves as an ongoing director and dramaturg for the Street Theatre Company based in Seoul and Miryang, South Korea. Over the past years he has served twice as a Fulbright professor in the Czech Republic, a Guest Research Professor at the Korean National University of the Arts, and an exchange professor at the Taiwan National College for the Performing Arts.

Howard also leads the Thrall Children's Theatre program at Miami. Every year he helps to create, develop, and tour an operetta for children. Cast with Miami students, these tours primarily visit schools in economically challenged areas in Ohio, but also frequently tour abroad to the Czech Republic, Korea, Taiwan, & Russia.

At Miami, Howard teaches coursework in modern European and world drama, and in affiliation with Teacher Education conducts a workshop every summer to the Czech Republic. He strongly encourages and supports study and travel abroad, and often works with students to create such opportunities.
