For this weekend intensive workshop, we will learn eight bookbinding techniques (two one-page-books, 3 pamphlets structures, Japanese binding, flag book and double accordion book) and two boxes’ structures (slipcase and clamshell). The class will start with an introduction with slides of contemporary artist books and a live presentation of published titles and will finish with a group presentation and critique. Students are welcome to add content guided by the instructor.

María Verónica San Martín (b.1981) is a Chilean New York-based multidisciplinary artist and educator who explores the impacts of history, memory, and trauma through archives, artist books, installation, sculpture and performance. San Martín was a fellow at the Whitney Museum’s ISP, a scholar at the NY Center for Book Arts and holds an MA from The Corcoran School of Art and Design, GW University, DC (BecasChile).
Her work is part of more than 60 collections including the Pompidou (FR), the MET (NYC), The Museum of Memory and Human Rights (SCL) and the Walker Art Center (MN). She has exhibited nationally and internationally including the New York Immigrant Artist Biennial, a public Art at Rockefeller Center, the Chilean National Archive, the Museum Meermanno, Netherlands, BRIC, Artists Space, and screened at the Queen Museum, New York.
She has participated in international residencies and has been awarded two NYFA and three National Chilean grants (FONDART). She teaches at the NY Center for Book Arts, Penland School of Craft, NC, and is part of the education program of Booklyn Arts as well as a board member.
San Martín has been performing and lecturing her “Moving Memorial” series of artist books, “Dignidad ” and The Javelin Project in museums, public spaces, and cultural centers since 2016. She recently performed at Lincoln Center, had her fourth solo show in Chile at Galeria NAC (Santiago), and launched "Collective Roadmap", a co-curated artist book at the Museum of Contemporary Art also in Santiago. She is currently an Interlude resident (Hudson, NY) while working on a commissioned for the National Museum of Women in the Arts and in her third solo exhibition in the United States at Trinity College, CT.
