Job Description
The ELLWC employs Miami undergraduate students (sophomores and above) from all majors to serve as paid writing consultants. Consultants’ primary responsibility is to help multilingual (ELL) writers become more confident users of academic English and effective writers across genres and disciplines.
This job provides unique learning opportunities that lead you to personal success. You’ll gain intensive experience in communicating across cultures, facilitating learning through communication and engagement, solving problems, answering complex questions, and effectively communicating complex concepts in simple terms. This position will empower you with new interaction and leadership strategies, interpersonal skills, such as patience and empathy, and time management skills. For students in the University Honors Program, this position counts as a teaching/tutoring honors experience. Not to mention, this job will make your résumé more competitive.
After completing a three-credit intensive training course (ENG 481: Theories and Practices of Writing Center Consulting: Consulting Second Language Writers in the English Language Learner Writing Center) in Fall 2023, consultants:
- Hold in-person one-on-one or small group consulting sessions and/or asynchronous written online appointments.
- Consult at least 5 hours a week.
- Introduce Miami students to ELLWC services through class visits.
- Facilitate short in-class peer-review workshops.
- Attend and lead ongoing professional development seminars.
Our Writing Consultants
Our consultants are Miami undergraduate students from diverse majors and with a variety of interests.
Callie is a senior majoring in professional writing and environmental science and is working on her minor in Japanese. She is a member of Miami's new aerial arts club and hopes to hold a leadership position in the future. She enjoys writing and drawing in her spare time. |
Claire is a senior double majoring in journalism and political science. On campus, she is involved with The Miami Student and Gamma Phi Beta sorority. When she’s not studying or writing for the newspaper, she can be found reading, going on runs, and hanging out with friends. |
Fiona is a junior with a creative writing major and a minor in rhetoric writing. Once she graduates, she hopes to be published within a year and intends to pursue a master's degree. She is president of ACW and is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community at Miami. |
Halle is a senior political science major and is an active member in her sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma. She is also president of her ROTC club, Start Strong. She intends to be a lawyer where she will exercise her writing skills on daily basis. |
Ian is a senior majoring in speech pathology and audiology. He has studied Deaf culture and ASL academically and aspires to learn more about language development. He is a proud member of the Men's Glee Club and Tabletop Gaming Club. |
Jazlyn is a senior with majors in linguistics and Spanish with a minor in statistical methods. She also takes Chinese classes at Miami and wants to learn multiple languages. She is part of the staff for a campus literary magazine, Happy Captive. She enjoys reading, playing badminton and exploring nature. |
Justin is a senior majoring in linguistics with a minor in anthropology. He has several years of experience learning Spanish and, in the future, plans to develop his skills in Italian, French, German, and Greek. His interests and hobbies include movies, music, travel, fencing, fashion and design, as well as activities in nature such as birdwatching. After graduating, he plans to enter the National Park Service as a park ranger. |
Madalyn is a junior with a major in speech pathology and audiology. She pursues her interest in language daily through her speech-aimed courses here at Miami. Once she graduates, she hopes to work as a pediatric speech-language pathologist, helping children work through and overcome speech/swallowing disorders. |
