Creating Quizzes and Exams

  1. In Course Navigation, click the Quizzes link.
  2. Click the Add Quiz button.
  3. In the Details tab...
    • Enter the name of your quiz.
    • In the Rich Content Editor, introduce your quiz with formatted text, images, video, or sample math equations. You can even use the media commenting tool to record an introduction to the quiz.
    • Complete the rest of the quiz details.
  4. Click the Questions tab. Manually create a new quiz question by clicking the New Question button.
  5. Quiz questions are not automatically numbered for instructors. To add a custom name to your quiz question, enter the name in the question text field. 
    • Note: Regardless of the question name, students always see quiz questions in numerical order (i.e. Question 1, Question 2).
  6. In the question type drop-down menu, you can create the following types of quiz questions:
    • Multiple Choice
    • True/False
    • Fill-in-the-Blank
    • Fill-in-Multiple-Blanks
    • Multiple Answers
    • Multiple Drop-down (can be used for Likert scale)
    • Matching
    • Numerical Answer
    • Formula (simple formula and single variable)
    • Essay
    • File Upload
  7. To set the point value for the question, enter the points in the pts. field.
  8. To save your question, click the Update Question button.
  9. Click the Save button to save your work and preview the quiz.
  10. Click the Preview button to see what students will see when they take the quiz. If the preview shows the quiz the way you want it, click the Publish button.

Add Questions from Question Bank

  1. Follow steps 1 through 3 from the previous section "Creating Quizzes and Exams".
  2. Click the Questions tab. Click the Find Questions button.
  3. Select the question bank where you want to select questions.
    • Note: When you find questions in a question bank, changes made to questions in the question bank will not update in the quiz.
  4. Check the boxes next to the questions you want to add to your quiz. If you want to select all the questions, click the Select All link.
  5. When you've selected all the questions you want to use, click the Add Questions button.
  6. Click the Save button to save your work and preview the quiz. If you are ready to publish your quiz and make it available to students, click the Save & Publish button.

Extend Time on a Quiz

  1. In your course navigation, go to Quizzes.
  2. Click the name of the quiz.
  3. Click the Moderate This Quiz link.
  4. To moderate a quiz for one student, locate the student and click the Edit icon.
  5. If you want to select multiple students, click the checkbox next to each of their names. If you want to select all students, click the top checkbox. Click Change Extensions for [#] Selected Students button.
  6. Type the number of extra minutes in the Extra Time on Every Attempt field. Extra time can only be added in full-minute increments.


  • The Extra Time on Every Attempt field only displays for quizzes with a time limit.
  • Quiz availability dates still apply when moderating a quiz. If the Until date passes when students are taking the quiz with extended time, the quiz auto-submits even if the student's time extension has not expired.
