Uploading Videos to Canvas

If you aren't using Kaltura Personal Capture to record videos or screencasts directly in Canvas, you may wonder how to upload and embed pre-recorded videos (perhaps using Screencast-O-Matic or another tool) in Canvas.

Kaltura, which is a video management system integrated into Canvas, can be used through My Media in the left navigation of any course. You may need to enable My Media to display in your course navigation.

Below you will find step-by-step instructions for adding My Media to your course navigation, uploading video, and embedding media.

Add My Media to Your Canvas Course Navigation

  1. Go to "Settings" in your Canvas course.
  2. Enable "My Media" in the Navigations tab by dragging it from the lower part of the list to any location in the upper list.
  3. Scroll down and click "Save".

Upload a Pre-recorded Video to Kaltura

Uploading videos to Kaltura instead of "Files" in Canvas can save a lot of space in your course. In My Media, do the following:

  1. Click "Add New", and then select "Media Upload" from the drop down list.
  2. Drag and drop a file into the "Upload Media" box, or click on "+Choose a file to upload".
  3. Once the upload is complete, a green message bar will appear at the top of the screen: "Upload completed! Complete the required information for the uploaded media below."
  4. Enter a description if you want to do so.
  5. Type in the course code (e.g., ABC123 – no spaces) as the tag.
  6. Click the "Save" button.
  7. The video will be visible in your My Media list as soon as it has finished processing.

Adding a "My Media" Item

You will add videos to course pages, assignments, or discussions from My Media.

In the rich content text editor, you will click the "More External Tools" icon (a blue V-shaped icon) and select "Embed Kaltura Media".

You will then be able to select a video that you have already made, or begin the process of adding a new one by using Kaltura's Personal Capture.
