Where do I access Proctorio?

Proctorio is integrated with Canvas, but by default, it’s hidden from your course navigation menu. Be aware that it appears as "Secure Exam Proctor" in Canvas. If you will be using Proctorio, review the Canvas Community page on course navigation links to learn how to add the link for Proctorio to your course's navigation menu.

How do I use Proctorio?

What internet browsers are approved for Proctorio?

Proctorio currently supports the following internet browsers: Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Opera, and Brave.

Is there anything else I need to install on my computer in order to use Proctorio?

The Proctorio browser extension must be installed. This process only needs to be done once. The extension will update automatically. If you are using Chrome, a shield icon in the top right of the browser reflects successful installation.

How do I enable Proctorio in my Canvas course?

Enable Proctorio by going to Settings > Navigation on your Canvas course, and moving "Secure Exam Proctor" from the area that hides items from the students to the upper part of the list. Make sure to save your navigation settings.

How do I enable Proctorio in my quiz/exam?

After Proctorio is enabled in your Canvas course, you can enable Proctorio in any timed, graded quizzes/exams in the Quizzes tab (Proctorio does not work with assignments). You can do so by checking the "Enable Proctorio Secure Exam Proctor" option in the quiz settings (Note: the password is automatically handled by Proctorio. Never change it or share with students).

Where are the settings in Proctorio, and how do I use them?

After Proctorio is enabled for an exam, you can then go to the "Proctorio Settings" at the top of the quiz editing screen and set up the proctoring details. You can click the question mark at the top-right corner of each option and watch a short video tutorial, or you may also use the video below on how to use each option.

How can I review the exam proctoring results?

To review exam/quiz proctoring results, simply go to the exam/quiz, and click “Proctorio Gradebook” to the right (under the SpeedGrader button).

Please note: the suspicious score generated by Proctorio is useful as a reference. Actual student behaviors can be affected by various environmental factors. It is recommended that you check random spots in the recording of students.

How can I help my students to be prepared for a proctored exam?

Below is a list of things students should prepare before the exam:

  • Stable internet connection
  • Web camera
  • Microphone
  • Identification (if you want to require it)
  • A supported web browser (Edge, Chrome, Opera, Brave)
  • Proctorio browser extension
  • An environment where they might feel comfortable while being recorded

You might also want to offer a Proctorio practice quiz which can allow students to be better prepared, as well as additional detailed documentation. Both the practice quiz and documentation can be imported from Canvas Commons (module name: "Proctorio Secure Exam Proctor")

What if Proctorio doesn't seem to be working in my course?

First, please make sure students are using a supported browser and that the Proctorio browser extension is installed. Consider re-installing the Proctorio browser extension (in Chrome, you can do this by right-clicking on the shield icon in the top-right corner of the browser and selecting "Remove from Chrome"). After that, re-install the Proctorio browser extension once again and restart the browser.

Can I disable Proctorio for a particular student?

Yes. You can allow a particular student to take the exam without Proctorio by going into the exam and clicking the "Moderate this Quiz" button to the right (above SpeedGrader). Then, uncheck the checkbox for the Proctorio column.

Where can I get technical support for Proctorio?

If you (or your students) have checked to make sure they are using a supported browser, ensured the Proctorio browser extension is installed, and attempted to re-install the extension, but you continue to experience technical issues, Proctorio offers 24/7 technical support via live chat, email, or phone at (480) 428-4089 or toll-free (866) 948-9248.

You may also submit a ticket to Miami's IT Help to notify Miami Online staff of any issues.

Syllabus Language

To use Proctorio in your course, regardless of modality, you will need to include a statement in your syllabus. This gives students an overview of test proctoring and allows them to address any accessibility concerns with Student Disability Services.

Proctorio Syllabus Statement

In this course, we will use Proctorio for proctoring your exams and/or quizzes. Similar to having an instructor in the room monitoring students during an in-class exam, Proctorio is a digital tool for monitoring student academic integrity on key assessments. There are a variety of ways (settings) that Proctorio may be used to monitor online assessments including recording your computer screen, recording your internet browser use, and using a webcam and microphone to record your actions and your surroundings during the exam.

To use Proctorio, you will need to:

  • Purchase or borrow a webcam and microphone. Only built-in or external webcams, microphones, and speakers are accepted. Virtual recording tools are not accepted and will need to be uninstalled before testing. All potential acts of dishonesty will be handled through the procedures outlined in the Miami University Academic Integrity Policy.
  • Use one of the following supported browsers: Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Opera, or Brave.
  • Download and install the Proctorio browser extension once you click to begin a quiz. (
  • Show your photo ID (Miami ID or driver's license).
  • Wear appropriate attire/clothing, and do not wear hats or sunglasses.
  • If your instructor requires a recording of you and your surroundings, you will need to test from a computer with a webcam, microphone, and strong internet connection (we recommend using wired high-speed). Consider taking your exam on campus if this is not available to you off-campus. Contact your instructor for options concerning testing on campus.

For assessments that require recording your actions and your surroundings:

  • Proctorio records your photo ID (Miami ID or driver's license).
  • Proctorio identifies and records your testing location based on your IP address.
  • Proctorio records your desktop(s) when completing quizzes/exams.
  • Proctorio records your surroundings while testing. Seek permission from any third parties before testing. Students accept all responsibility and liability for violations of any third-party privacy concerns.
  • Proctorio will "flag" potential cheating behaviors, and a report will be generated for the instructor.

It would be a good idea to complete the practice quiz and tutorial before your official exam or quiz so that:

  • You become familiar with the Proctorio.
  • You can be sure it works within the testing environment being used before your test.
  • Click on Quizzes or Modules in the left-hand navigation of the course to access the Practice Quiz.

Support and troubleshooting tips:

  • For any technical issues with Proctorio, please use either their chat support or call Proctorio at 866-948-9248.
  • To access the Proctorio Chat Support: On an exam page in Canvas, click the Proctorio shield located in the upper-right corner of the browser. (View the image below to see where the shield is located.) Once you click the shield, select "Live Chat" to initiate a chat with Proctorio and get immediate assistance.
