Admission to and enrollment in our program for 2021 are in states of transition. Spring 2021 applicants will follow a separate set of criteria than our Fall 2021 semester applicants. Please follow the application term guidelines below.

Spring 2021 Applicants

Full admission to the Inclusive Special Education major requires admission to Miami as well prior approval from the program. Program approval requires an application and documentation of the following requirements: 

  • Minimum of 15 hours of coursework with a grade-point average of 2.75 or higher
  • Completion of or enrollment in EDP 201
  • 100 hours of documented service work (volunteer or paid) with persons with disabilities (this may be unpaid OR paid work and may include work completed in JR and SR years of high school)
  • One-page essay. Write a one-page description of your current philosophy of and interest in educating learners with exceptionalities
Students typically apply in the first semester of their sophomore year. Junior level courses require sophomore program admission. The spring program application deadline is February 1. Admission notification occurs within one month of submitting a complete application.
Documenting service hours
Applicants must provide a letter from a supervisor or other administrator verifying what the applicant did, when, with whom & where this work was done, and the number of hours, including a name, and contact information.
Service may be conducted at one location or many locations. Letters from each location are required.
Up to 50% of your hours may come from work involving the support of a family member.
Writing the essay

This essay introduces the committee to you and tells us why you want to be an Intervention Specialist, what you believe, and what you bring to the major.
The essay is scored on both content and writing style.
The essay may be single-spaced.

Fall 2021 Applicants

Please select "Inclusive Special Education" as your major of choice when applying to Miami University

Admitted students must meet a set of benchmarks to continue their enrollment in the major. The program will monitor student progress each semester. Criteria for continuance include:

  1. Maintain a cumulative 2.75 GPA or higher.
  2. Students will complete a written philosophy statement of inclusive special education.
  3. Students will complete and submit documentation for 50 hours of service learning in partnership with individuals with disabilities by the end of sophomore year.
  4. Students will successfully compete key assessments in core courses.
  5. Score at or above the 50th* percentile on each of the Reading, Writing, and Math sections of the ACT or SAT.

These test scores are required by our accreditor, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
* Students who do not meet the 50th percentile requirement in one or more test area may petition to continue in the program. Please contact the Department to submit a petition. These percentile scores may vary slightly from year to year. Note: The writing requirement only applies to students entering a cohort in Fall 2021 and beyond.
