CADS Student Intern Project Results in Successfully Classifying 85% of Healthcare Claims for Major Hospital

Throughout the fall semester of 2016 four student interns, Hayden Dygert, Mike Macey, Ryan Miller, and Alison Tuiyott, with assistance from Fadel Megahed, consulted for one of the largest rehabilitation hospital systems in the country. This multidisciplinary team came from backgrounds in statistics, accounting, economics, computer science, information systems, and analytics.

The four students conducted a text analysis, using agile methods, working with both structured and semi-structured data in R. The goal was to categorize records to help the hospital system better understand claims data. The team was successful building a model with the ability to classify 85% of new claims.
