4 Students Compete in the Pitt Business Analytics Competition

March 24, 2017

During Miami University's spring break, Michael Macey, Micky Whitford, Cody Philips, and Robert Garrett competed in a national analytics case competition at the University of Pittsburgh sponsored by Dick's Sporting Goods. Nearly 30 teams applied to participate in the competition and the Miami team of four was selected to compete as one of 8 finalists. The competition challenged teams to determine what stores are most beneficial to launch a new team based-training product. Teams had two weeks to complete the case.

For the competition, the each team was given a dataset of Dick's stores including their respective locations. The Miami students pulled in external data in order to complete their analysis and constructed an K-nearest neighbor algorithm based on consumer demographics and pricing data. At the end of the two week period, the team presented their findings to a panel of Dick's Sporting Goods executives in Pittsburgh.
