Joseph R. Binzer (Accountancy '77) has been appointed auxiliary bishop of Cincinnati by Pope Benedict XVI. Binzer has been chancellor of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and pastor of St. Louis Church in downtown Cincinnati since 2003. Before entering the priesthood, Binzer worked as an accountant.

Ashley Bourn (Marketing '06) was recognized by Toll Brothers as sales manager of the month for March, 2011. She is sales manager at Firano at Naples, a Toll Brothers community of single-family homes in Naples, Florida. Shortly after graduation from Miami, Bourn joined the company as a sales associate, and was promoted to sales manager two years later.

John Chevalier (Finance '89) has been elected as a director of the National Investor Relations Institute. He is director of investor relations for Procter & Gamble. Since he joined its investor relations department in 2002, P&G has been recognized by Institutional Investor Magazine as "Best Investor Relations Program in the Consumer Sector" for seven years.

Todd Creech (Finance, Accountancy '90) has been named chief financial officer and vice president of business development of SARcode Corp. The appointment, made Feb. 1, 2011, makes Creech a member of the company's leadership team. He initially filled those roles as a consultant beginning in November 2010. SARcode, based in Brisbane, CA., is a privately held biotechnology company. Creech has more than a decade of executive experience in finance and business development in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. He earned an MBA from Duke University.

Peter Deschner (Accountancy '00) has been promoted to director of the Deep Value Fund at Levine Leichtman Capital Partners in Los Angeles. He joined LLCP in 2008 as an associate director; prior to that he was an associate at Oaktree Capital Management LP. He earned his MAcc at the University of Virginia.

Doug Dwyre (Accountancy '87) has been named chief product officer of Mocapay, a Denver-based provider of mobile marketing and payment platforms. Dwyre was formerly vice president of global business development and payments at Voltage Security.

Tom Gonnella (Finance '92) is senior vice president for corporate development at Lincoln Trust Co., a major national provider of trust and custodial services headquartered in Denver. He earned an MBA and a master's degree in finance from the University of Colorado at Denver.

Donald Hoffman (Management '60), retiring president and CEO of the Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati, is the recipient of this year's Health Care Heroes' Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the Cincinnati Business Courier. In 1997, Hoffman was instrumental in creating the Health Foundation, an independent social welfare organization dedicated to improving community health.

Cindy Holmes (Finance '90) was appointed director of investor relations for The Kroger Company, effective March 6. Holmes began her career with Kroger in 1990 in its Information Systems and Services department, and for the past ten years as served as the company's assistant treasurer. She earned an MBA from Northern Kentucky University and is a certified treasury professional.

Patrick T. Hughes (Finance '89) was recently hired by Franklin Templeton Institutional as vice president, U.S. institutional business development. Before joining Franklin Templeton, Hughes was vice president of sales and marketing for Bank of New York Mellon Transition and Beta management. He earned his MBA from Ohio State University and is a certified financial advisor.

Kari Kemerer (Marketing '00) has joined Nimlok, a Chicago-based maker of trade show exhibits and event environments, as its brand manager. In her new position, Kemerer will develop and track marketing plans for Nimlok products. She previously worked for Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc.

Michelle Massey (Accountancy, Finance '90) has joined Swagelok Co. as director, financial reporting and accounting. She will lead implementation of new U.S. and international accounting standards and reporting practices. Swagelok, headquartered in Solon, Ohio, is a developer and provider of fluid system products, assemblies and services. Prior to joining the company, Massey held a number of positions at Ernst & Young LLP. She is a CPA and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Tony Paul (Management '89) has been named Harte-Hanks, Inc.'s new group managing director for mail and logistics in its Direct Marketing business. Paul has ten years' operations leadership in mail and production facilities for major printing and publications companies. From his office in Baltimore, Paul will lead Harte-Hanks facilities in seven cities throughout the country.

Janet R. Popowski (Finance '83) has been appointed assistant vice president, general liability, umbrella and professional liability line of business for Selective Insurance Company of America. She assumed her new position in February. Prior to that, Popowski led the product development effort for commercial accounts at Travelers Insurance Co. She is a chartered property and casualty underwriter.

Bradley C. Richardson (Business Economics, Finance '80) is executive vice president and chief financial officer for Diebold, Incorporated. He is responsible for and oversees the company's global financial systems and related processes, including the investor relations, corporate communications, global risk and security, taxes and treasury divisions. His career has included earlier positions at Modine Manufacturing Co. and BP Amoco. He earned a master's degree in accounting and finance from Indiana University and is a CPA.

Mia Scholz (Accountancy '88) has been promoted to the position of senior vice president accounting and controller by Walgreens, where she has worked since 1999. Before her recent promotion, she was Walgreens' corporate vice president accounting and controller. Before joining Walgreens, Scholz was a senior manager for Arthur Andersen LLP in Chicago.

Mike Smerklo (Accountancy '91) is chairman of the board and CEO of ServiceSource International, a provider of sales staff outsourcing and proprietary customer management software. Under Smerklo's leadership, ServiceSource has grown into a leader in the service revenue industry, with more than 1300 employees globally. The company's corporate headquarters are in San Francisco.

Kenneth D. Sweder (Finance '91) has been elected president of Interline Brands, Inc. He will continue to serve as the company's chief operating officer, a position he has held since Oct. 2008. He joined the company in April 2007 as chief merchandising officer. Interline, a distributor of maintenance, repair and operations products, is based in Jacksonville, Florida. Sweder has an MBA from the University of Chicago.

George Tsakumis (Accountancy, Finance '93, MAcc '96), an associate professor of accounting at Drexel University's LeBow College of Business, was honored in December with an award for teaching excellence. He specifically was among those recognized for significant contributions in the field of distance or online learning. Tsakumis earned his Ph.D. in accounting from the University of South Carolina.

Greg Watson (Marketing '93) has been named sales and marketing director for Florida Today, a Gannett Co. publication. Watson has spent his career with Gannett, both at the corporate level and in a previous position with Florida Today.

Lawson Whiting (Finance '90) has been appointed managing director, Western Europe, for Brown-Forman Corp. He will be based in London. Louisville-based Brown-Forman is the parent company of alcoholic beverage brands such as Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey, Southern Comfort, Chambord, Canadian Mist, and Korbel. The company's brands are sold in more than 130 countries worldwide. Whiting, who has been with Brown-Forman since 1997, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago.


Louis Alexander, Jr. (Finance '00) has announced his engagement to Marie Linda Awad of Pittsburgh. After graduating from Miami, Alexander earned a JD from Cleveland Marshall College of Law and an MBA from Cleveland State University. He is employed as an attorney by the law firm of Blumling and Gusky, LLP, in Pittsburgh. Awad received a doctor of medicine degree from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and is a resident physician in general surgery at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. An August wedding is planned.
