In-Person Appointments

The Howe Writing Center offers in-person writing consultations at our King Library, Farmer School of Business, and Peabody Hall locations. We follow all campus health and safety guidance and regularly clean our consulting spaces.

In-person consultations are helpful at any stage of the writing process, from early brainstorming to final drafting. During a consultation, you and your consultant will:

  • Discuss your assignment and your writing goals.
  • Set an agenda for the appointment.
  • Read, write, and talk through your draft.
  • Discuss revision options and new approaches for your current and future writing.

If you have questions about in-person consulting, please contact HWC Manager Kate Francis (francik@miamiaoh.edu).

Common Questions

Where can I meet on campus with an HWC Consultant?

King Library: Our main location on the first floor of King Library, established in 2007, features an open concept with several tables and meeting areas to write and meet with consultants about your writing. When you arrive you’ll see a welcome desk where you check in for your appointment.

Peabody Hall: Our satellite location in Peabody Hall was established in 2008 and is referred to as the Windate Writing Center in honor of a grant from Helen Windate. This center is located on the lower floor of Peabody in Room 18. Just look for the Writing Center sign and check in with the consultant.

Farmer School of Business: The Howe Writing Center’s ties to the Farmer School of Business date back to 1996, when the Howe Center for Business Writing was founded. This center is located on the third floor of FSB, room 2045.

How should I prepare for my on-campus appointment?

You should come to your appointment with some ideas about what you'd like to work on for 45 minutes. You can bring a print or digital copy of your paper. You can also bring your own computer or use one of the writing center's laptops. We ask that you also bring the following, when applicable:

  • The assignment sheet and course syllabus
  • Any writing you’ve already done, including notes, outlines, or early drafts
  • Relevant books, articles, or other resources you’re using
  • Any feedback you’ve already received

Accessibility

The Howe Writing Center is committed to helping provide accommodations for all Miami writers who have scheduled writing center consultations. To request an accommodation, or to inquire about the accommodations we can provide (i.e., viewing or accessing materials in alternative formats, using assistive technologies during an in-person consultation), please contact writing center manager Kate Francis (francik@miamioh.edu) at least 2 business days prior to your consultation. We are also happy to collaborate with the Miller Center in providing such accommodations. If you use a screen reader, check out our web guide on how screen readers function within the Live Online consulting space
