Laboratory Coordinator, Senior

General Function

Performs a variety of administrative and clinical tasks in support of department's daily operations

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Serves as lead worker, organizes laboratory work areas, equipment and supplies; cleans work area and equipment.
  • Assists in the enforcement of rules and regulations.
  • Oversees staff and student workers; assigns duties, monitors work and trains employees.
  • Monitors equipment inventories.
  • Maintains and operates laboratory equipment. Schedules equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Transports materials that may include food, utensils, or animals to and from laboratory.
  • May feed, water and clean cages.
  • May assist in student lab set-up and clean up.
  • Responsible for blood and sample collections, injections, and performing routine laboratory tests.
  • Assists and performs complex procedures related to surgery, anesthesia, diagnostic testing treatments, post-procedural care and euthanasia for all species.
  • Plans, develops and updates departmental SOPs and provides staff training.
  • Performs health monitoring activities and assists in diagnosing animal health conditions.
  • Responsible for monthly departmental quality control procedures that complies with USDA and IACUC requirements. Documents and reports incidents to supervisor and governmental agencies.
  • Serves as a seasoned and proficient professional.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to Animal Facilities Supervisor or Department Chair

Direction Given: Functional guidance to student and/or classified employees on an ongoing basis

Minimum Requirements

Associate’s degree in Applied Science or related field with two (2) years experience. Experience must include working in a laboratory animal setting. Laboratory Animal Technologist (LAT) Certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Working Conditions

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking and standing with some lifting of material weighing 25 to 50 pounds. Some exposure to unpleasant elements which are particularly disagreeable. Some element of personal risk due to handling of chemicals, hot water, and/or animals.
