Pharmacy Technician

General Function

Assist licensed pharmacist by performing routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Receive and fill pharmaceutical requests as presented by students and the SHS pharmacy. Prepare medications for distribution to students, including over the counter and pre-packaging of medications.
  • Obtain student-patient information.
  • Assist in the maintenance of appropriate departmental records.
  • Prepare and print prescription labels and reports.
  • Assist with medication inventory and replenish pharmacy supplies.
  • Deliver prescriptions to other areas of the Student Health Services.
  • Respond to phone and direct inquiries from students and staff.

Direction Received: Reports to Pharmacist

Minimum Requirements

Requires a high school education or GED and six months of pharmacy technician training. Must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of basic medical and pharmaceutical terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, recordkeeping, techniques, and ethics
  • Ability to operate a computer
  • Ability to communicate and work well with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Working Conditions

Physical effort may involve sitting or standing. May require some lifting of materials weighing less than 25 pounds.
