Trades Shop Supervisor

General Function

Performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks related to coordinating the maintenance activities of university facilities or property. Direct supervision of two (2) to eight (8) classified employees.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Oversee activities of a moderately sized skilled trades shop; sets priorities and schedules projects; prepares cost estimates.
  • Full direct supervision of two (2) to eight (8) classified employees; interviews and hires; makes recommendations on discipline; recommendations on terminating; establishes schedule and assigns tasks; monitors and evaluates performance. Assists in enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and reviews completed work of employees and contractors; ensures that any needed changes or corrections are made.
  • Researches and evaluates new materials and equipment, makes recommendations regarding purchse.
  • Maintains inventory of parts and supplies; reorder as necessary; maintians department records and work orders.
  • May assist in maintenance and repair work as necessary.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to Trades Shop Manager

Direction Given: Direct supervision of two (2) to eight (8) classified staff

Minimum Requirements

Requires an associate's degree in a related field and four years experience in a directly related work area or the equivalent in professional work and/or training beyond high school. Must possess a valid operator's drivers license. Certain positions may require industry related certifications or registration.

  • Knowledge of procedures and equipment of a particular skilled trade

  • Mechanical aptitude

Working Conditions

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking, standing and lifting. Somewhat disagreeable working conditions. Some exposure to several unpleasant elements.
