X-Ray Technician

General Function

Operates x-ray equipment and performs other related tasks that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of illness

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Reviews requisition to determine what type of X-ray exam is needed; registers and prepares patient.
  • Takes and develops X-rays; reviews X-rays to ensure quality control; provides additional instructions to patient regarding further evaluation.
  • Checks and records charges; makes identification labels for films; routes film to hospital for readings.
  • Receives film from hospital; records readings; copies film and reports; maintains files of film and reports.
  • Perform various clerical and custodial tasks including general office cleanup and preventive maintenance on X-ray machines, and answering of telephones.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to Health Service Administrator

Direction Given: No responsibility for directing the work of others

Minimum Requirements

Requires nine months of coursework or training beyond high school in X-ray Technology, ARRT certification and one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification is required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of X-ray equipment and procedures
  • Knowledge of computer and other office machines and procedures
  • Ability to communicate with individuals from a wide range of cultural backgrounds

Working Conditions

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking and standing.  Exposure to X-ray radiation poses a possible health hazard.
