Enrollment and Course Completion Questions

How do I enroll in the course?

From the Professional Education Canvas Catalog homepage, you can browse our courses and select the Miami Writing Institute.

If you would like to enroll, you can click "Enroll Now" on the MWI course page. You will then be prompted to create a Professional Education Canvas account to be able to complete enrollment.

If you have any questions during this process, please contact professionaled@miamioh.edu.

Do I have to be present at certain times for the MWI?

No. The course is asynchronous and can be completed on your own time. There are no face-to-face sessions with other students or instructors.

How much time will I need to spend?

The MWI is self-paced; you can spend as much time on it as you like in a given week. You can expect to spend 2–3 hours/module for a total of about 12 hours, but this will vary on your pace and interest in some of the optional readings and activities.

Can you confirm if I’m registered for the course?

If you’re not sure you’re registered, email professionaled@miamioh.edu to confirm.

Content Questions

Does this course pertain to creative writing?

This course relates to all sorts of professional and civic writing, but it is not a guide to creative writing (fiction, poetry, etc.). If you'd like to take a creative writing class, we recommend checking out offerings from the Department of English.

General Questions

What are the technology requirements for the Miami Writing Institute and other Canvas Catalog courses?

Canvas performs best using the most current stable release of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Your operating system should also be up to date, including security upgrades. Please visit the Canvas Basics Guide to verify if your browser is compatible with Canvas Catalog and to learn more about the required technology while using Instructure products.

For the best learning experience, we recommend that you complete this course using a laptop/computer/Mac device through a stable web browser and not on a mobile device through the Canvas app.

Course Navigation Questions

Some of the images are cut off when I’m viewing the course content. How do I fix this?

There are several reasons this could happen, but here are a few things you can try: If you're using a mobile device (like a phone or iPad), switch to a laptop or desktop computer. Another option you can try is, if you're not using Google Chrome as your browser, try changing to Google Chrome (we've noticed that there are some problems with using Safari or other browsers).

I can’t find the right answers and pass a quiz to keep going with the myth. What should I do?

Carefully reach the questions on each quiz, as sometimes it asks you to check all that apply, meaning there is more than one right answer to a question. The quiz about H&R Block in Myth 1, for example, has questions that require multiple answers.

The content appears to be a little small. Am I able to remove the course section sidebar to see the content better?

Yes, you can hide the course section sidebar to enlarge the content screen to see the Myth better. Click on the hamburger button at the top-left of the content to hide the sidebar (as shown below).

To move on to the next section of the module, click the ‘Continue’ button. You will then be able to see the next section of your current module. When you have completed the module, select the “Next” button to move on to the next full unit.

I logged out of the MWI, but I can’t log back in.

There are a couple of different things that might be going on. First, make sure you’re using the same email to log in that you used to register for the course initially If that does not work, it is recommended to reset your password.

To reset your password from the catalog.miamioh.edu webpage, click on “Login” at the top-right of the page and then select “Forgot Password?”. From there, follow the steps to reset your password.
