What is Communication Studies?

Communication is the study of the process of using messages to generate and share meaning across a variety of different contexts, channels, and cultures. The Communication Studies major provides students with a strong core foundation in the study of communication, while also providing students advanced studies in particular communication contexts.

What are the features of Miami’s program?

The Communication Studies major will provide students with a strong knowledge base in the communication field, while also allowing for advanced study in selected areas. The degree emphasizes study of communication theory and research, while also providing students with hands-on experience through the study of important communication skills including verbal, written, small-group, and interpersonal. These skills are routinely identified by the Association of American Colleges & Universities and other organizations as the top skills employers seek in college graduates.

There are no additional admission requirements for this program.

What courses would I take?

Communication Studies majors take core courses in communication, as well as selecting five classes from a variety of classes that focus on particular communication contexts. In addition, students select two advanced electives courses that help them to round out their major courses. Besides courses in communication, students could take classes from commerce, English, and media studies.

What can I do with this major?

As a communication studies graduate, students could pursue a wide variety of careers ranging from Training and Development Manager, Meeting and Event Planning, Advertising and Promotions Managers, or Sales Manager. The Communication Studies program emphasizes human identity and diversity, quantitative research competency, and 21st century communication skills.
