What is English Studies?

The English Studies degree draws on all of the fields within the study of English: literature, creative writing, and professional writing. English Studies prepares students with skills highly valued by today’s employers: the ability to analyze complex texts, evaluate and cite information, and communicate effectively in multiple genres and to multiple audiences.

What are the features of Miami’s program?

The English Studies degree gives students the freedom to explore the field of English by taking courses in literature, creative writing, and professional writing. Our award-winning faculty offer small, discussion-driven courses that encourage students to develop their critical reading, writing, and thinking skills.

What are the special admission requirements, if any?

There are no additional admission requirements for this program.

What courses would I take?

English Studies majors take three required courses: Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theory, Writing and the Professions, Capstone in English Studies. In addition, students choose a variety of courses in literary history, creative and professional writing, and multicultural perspectives.

What can I do with this major?

English Studies prepares majors to pursue career opportunities and professional advancement in a variety of sectors, including education, government, business, libraries, communication, market research, writing and editing, publishing, non-profit organizations, and many others. It is also works well as a pre-law major.
