What is Liberal Studies?

The BA or BS in Liberal Studies builds on Miami University’s strong liberal arts foundation and mission. This innovative degree is designed to provide students the opportunity for degree completion, moving them toward their educational and career goals while providing them essential skills highly desired by employers.

The specific demands of the 21st-century job market require students to possess transferable skills that allow them to easily navigate career transitions and advancements in the workplace. The curricular and co-curricular educational experiences that this major provides will enable students to develop and hone the following cross-cutting capacities:

  • Critical Thinking 
  • Complex Problem Solving
  • Written and Oral Communication
  • Applied Knowledge in Real World Settings
  • These cross-cutting capacities empower individuals and prepare them to deal with complexity, diversity, and change.

What courses would I take?

The BA/BS in Liberal Studies builds on Miami’s strong liberal arts core. Students will complete the Global Miami Plan, two core courses in Liberal Studies, and two multidisciplinary cognate areas (chosen from Professional Studies and Applied Sciences; Humanities; Social Sciences; Natural Science and Mathematics; Creative Arts; Education, Health, and Society; Computing and Engineering; and Business).

In LST 302: Principles of Liberal Studies, students learn more about liberal arts competencies and gain an appreciation for one or more career fields through experiential learning. In LST 402: Capstone in Liberal Studies, students apply liberal arts competencies to solve complex, real-world problems.

What can I do with this major?

Students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies are well suited to enter into the 21st-century workplace. Many graduates use their degree as the foundation for their professional career, while others gain the opportunity for advancement. Graduates are also well suited for advanced study in a graduate program.
