Face Coverings

Face coverings are critical in minimizing exposure to others near you. Employees are required to wear a face covering unless working alone in an enclosed workspace, working alone outdoors or are exempted from doing so in accordance with the Ohio Department of Health or the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Current Ohio Department of Health Guidelines provide: Businesses must require all employees to wear facial coverings, except for one of the following reasons:

  • Facial coverings in the work setting are prohibited by law or regulation
  • Facial coverings are in violation of documented industry standards
  • Facial coverings are not advisable for health reasons
  • Facial coverings are in violation of the business’s documented safety policies
  • Facial coverings are not required when the employee works alone in an assigned work area
  • There is a functional (practical) reason for an employee not to wear a facial covering in the workplace.

Face coverings must be worn when inside any Miami facility where others are present, including but not limited to reception/receiving areas, hallways, breakrooms, conference rooms, rest-rooms and other meeting locations. Face coverings should be worn outside if it is difficult to maintain physical distancing- e.g. outdoor events or while entering and exiting buildings.

You may wear a cloth face covering or disposable mask that allows you to breathe through it and covers both your nose and mouth. It is important to note that cloth coverings should be cleaned daily, and disposable masks should only be worn for one day and then thrown away. Also remember to wash your hands using hand washing techniques that include soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer before putting on your face covering or disposable mask and just prior to taking it off.

Some employees will continue to work remotely and will only be on campus for brief periods of time to perform work-related tasks (e.g., to pick up mail, supplies, a file, etc.). When employees come to campus, even for brief periods, wearing a face covering and practicing social distancing is required.

If you believe you cannot wear a face covering for some medical reason and need an accommodation, you should contact https://www.miamioh.edu/human-resources/about/accommodation-accessibility/index.html.

In addition to using a face covering, you should still practice other preventative efforts, such as hand-washing and  proper physical distancing, covering your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when coughing, and other preventative measures advised by the Ohio Department of Health at https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/covid-19/resources/general-resources/cloth-masks-or-face-coverings-in-the-workplace.
